An enduring love of candles, craftsmanship and quality

ester & erik is a family-owned company that has been making high-quality candles since 1987. Since then, the logo with the heart in the middle has been ester & erik’s trademark – an icon reflecting the couple’s fondness for each other, and in particular for candles, craftsmanship and the quality behind their vision. A vision of creating warmth, joy and life through the candles which they have invented, produced and developed themselves for two generations.

Ester and Erik

The dream of inventing, producing and selling a special handmade candle came to Erik Møller after he had worked for more than 15 years as an export salesman in the candle industry, and led to the establishment of ester & erik.
In realising his ambition of producing only the very best, Erik drew on all his creative knowledge about materials, decoration and exports. He developed, among other things, a candle-dipping machine, which is still used to hand-dip the candles. He invented the frame that doubles as a sales display for the taper candles, which can be cut directly from the frame. And he drove to trade fairs in Milan, Frankfurt and Zurich to promote the candles and the vision behind them.

Back at the factory, his wife Ester Møller honed the quality of the candles to make sure they lived up to Erik’s dreams. With diligence and a keen eye, she assumed responsibility for the painstaking dyeing, perfect lacquering and careful packaging of the candles, ensuring they evolved into the candles we know today – hand-made products of unparalleled quality.

Next generation

Today, it is still the love of the product, the raw materials and the production which motivates Søren Møller, who took over the company from his parents in 2001. His fascination for the craftsmanship, the special quality of the candles and their ability to illuminate the lives of people and create that special ambiance has been key ever since.

The family’s experience and expertise – combined with a uniquely elegant design and special production methods – mean that ester & erik candles are not simply candles, but design icons for the home.

The candle speaks for itself.

Under Søren Møller’s management, the factory has been developed with new resources and ideas. For example, ester & erik was the first candle manufacturer in Denmark to introduce robotics, which is used to wick the frames. Today, the company has more than 2,000 dealers, and exports to more than 55 countries.

Strongly focused on developing the business and the product range, for Søren Møller the old traditional frames are a constant source of inspiration in the innovation of new and modern products, for example a scented candle line, which is also produced at our factory in Denmark.

Water-based lacquers

All our classic candles are also available with a lacquer finish for even more colour options – designed to tastefully light up any season or occasion.

Our champagne, silver and gold-coloured candles are particularly popular when celebrating religious festivals, and all the dyes and lacquers we use are fade-resistant.

The champagne, silver, gold and lacquer finishes are a surface treatment which is applied to the candle. First, the candles are dipped into a chosen colour to add the over-dipping wax which ensures a beautiful and expressive finished candle. Next, the candle is surface-treated with champagne, gold, silver or lacquer.

Unique colour look based on innovative craftsmanship

ester & erik has developed an over-dipping wax which allows the entire colour palette to come into its own. The over-dipping wax also has a bearing on the depression which forms around the wick when the candle burns. The wax ensures that the depression is exactly the right size to prevent the wick from drowning and the candle from dripping.

Twice a year, we launch new colours. We keep an eye on current trends, and work with designers to decide on the right hues and shades. Having received samples of the new colours, we develop each colour in production, testing the colour concentration in the vat and the number of dips required to achieve the desired end-result.

European suppliers

ester & erik has been using the same suppliers ever since 1987, including the leading European suppliers of dyes and lacquers to the candle industry. This guarantees the high quality and outstanding craftsmanship of our candles, which has always been our hallmark.

Our candles are greener than you think

An ester & erik candle is of the highest quality, and is a 100% natural product, which contributes to making it a more sustainable product.

Unparalleled quality

The quality of a candle is determined by the quality of the raw materials, and for more than 30 years we have – uncompromisingly – used the same good raw materials to create natural candles without any artificial additives. All our candles are made using paraffin wax with the highest possible melting point, which means that our candles burn more slowly; in fact, 30% longer than other candles.

The purest wax available

Our candles are made of 100% paraffin wax, a pure mineral product derived from crude oil. Contrary to what many believe, crude oil has nothing to do with petrol. Crude oil only becomes petrol once it is refined, but before that stage the paraffin wax is isolated and used for producing candles, for example.
The quality of the candles depends on the purity of the paraffin wax which is used. Our candles are made from the most highly refined paraffin wax – in other words, you will not find a cleaner product from a more natural raw material.
In terms of sustainability, paraffin wax has the smallest carbon footprint and the least environmental impact of all waxes.

100% cotton wicks

All our wicks are made from 100% pure cotton, which is completely lead-free.

Frames made from recycled plastic

All our taper candles can be supplied on a design-patented frame which, together with the heart in our logo, has been the company’s signature ever since the outset. The top and bottom of the frame are made of recycled plastic with uprights made of iron, one of the most environmentally friendly raw materials available.

Dyes and lacquers

Our lacquers and gold and silver coatings are water-based, and all the dyes we use are supplied by leading European suppliers.

The dyes are colour-fast, which means they are very clear and durable and do not fade when exposed to sunlight.

FSC-certified packaging

The candles are packed in FSC-certified boxes, so you can buy the candles with a clear conscience and in the certain knowledge that no more wood is felled in FSC-certified forestry than the forest is able to reproduce. At the same time, you are helping to protect nature and the social conditions in the forests where the wood is sourced. The FSC-label guarantees that the fauna and flora in the forest are protected, that the forestry workers have received appropriate training and receive proper pay, and that they are provided with suitable safety equipment.

Order-based production

At ester & erik, we only produce to order, which helps to prevent waste.

Indoor climate-friendly burning and extinguishing

Danes are among the Europeans with the highest consumption of candles a year. Unfortunately, many people believe that burning real candles is just as harmful to your health as diesel particles emitted from large machinery, not least because of stories in the media saying that burning candles is harmful to human health.
Candles do indeed give off ultrafine particles, but the quality of the raw materials and the way in which the candles are produced makes a big difference to how many particles are released when the candle burns.
A new study* from the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark shows that candles made from stearin (which is derived from palm oil) cause more pollution with ultrafine particles than paraffin wax candles. One of the reasons is that the candles have a thicker wick which makes the flame larger, so more wick and wax are burned in an hour compared to a paraffin wax candle.
However, for all candle types, far fewer particles are produced if the candles are burned correctly. If the candles are protected from draughts, then “the content of black carbon is relatively low, indicating a low emission of soot by the candles, and (…) the particulate matter emitted by the candles almost completely consists of water-soluble salts, which unlike particles emitted by diesel engines, dissolve easily when they are inhaled and get in contact with the humid surfaces of the respiratory tract.”
Therefore, it is crucial that you do not place candles in draughts, near air-conditioning vents or on radiators, as otherwise the flame becomes unstable, and more particles are released. In addition, it is important to use a candle extinguisher to avoid smoke, and to ensure that the candle is completely snuffed out.
