Celebrating Midsummer – Scandinavia's Most Magical Tradition

This Saturday, families and friends across Scandinavia will gather to celebrate one of the most treasured occasions of the year – Midsummer.

Over the years, Claire and I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively throughout Denmark and the wider Nordic countries. We have fallen in love not only with the beautiful design and craftsmanship that inspires Blomster Designs, but also with the traditions and simple pleasures that make Scandinavian life so special.

Midsummer marks the longest days of the year and is a celebration of light, nature, family and togetherness. In Sweden, Finland and parts of Denmark and Norway, communities come together to enjoy food, music and time outdoors beneath the seemingly endless summer skies. The celebrations have roots stretching back centuries and remain one of the highlights of the Scandinavian calendar.

Flowers and Nature at the Heart of Midsummer

Perhaps unsurprisingly for us, flowers play a central role in Midsummer traditions. Wildflower wreaths are woven and worn, tables are decorated with freshly picked blooms and homes are filled with greenery. There is something wonderfully simple and joyful about bringing nature indoors – a philosophy that lies at the very heart of Scandinavian living.

In Sweden, the iconic maypole is decorated with flowers and foliage before communities gather to dance and celebrate.

Many young people still follow the charming tradition of placing seven different flowers beneath their pillow in the hope of dreaming about their future partner.

Danish Midsummer Evenings

One of our favourite memories from Denmark is experiencing the long summer evenings where daylight seems to linger forever. Danish Midsummer, known as Sankt Hans Aften, is celebrated with friends and family gathering by the sea or around bonfires, sharing food and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere that Scandinavians do so well.

There is a wonderful sense of hygge during these evenings – candles flickering, conversations flowing and everyone appreciating the beauty of summer.

Our Favourite Memories of Denmark

Some of our happiest memories are from travelling through Denmark. From wandering the colourful streets and harbours, enjoying coffee and pastries in cosy cafés, to discovering beautifully designed shops filled with timeless Scandinavian pieces, every visit has left us inspired.

What has always stood out to us is the Danish appreciation for simple pleasures. Fresh flowers on the table, meals shared with family and friends, and homes designed to feel warm and welcoming all embody the spirit of hygge. It is this way of living that first captured our hearts and continues to influence the collections we carefully choose for Blomster Designs.
