The Story Behind ArchitectMade: Bringing Danish Design Icons to Life

Updated: Jun 9

Preserving Denmark's Most Beloved Design Classics

Some products are designed to serve a purpose.

Others are designed to make us smile.

ArchitectMade has spent nearly two decades bringing some of Denmark's most cherished design icons into homes around the world. Their collection isn't built around trends or seasonal fashions. Instead, it celebrates timeless pieces created by some of Denmark's most talented architects and designers.

At Blomster Designs, ArchitectMade has become one of our most loved collections. Customers are often drawn to the beautiful craftsmanship, but what makes these pieces truly special are the stories behind them.

And perhaps no story captures the heart of ArchitectMade better than the famous Duck and Duckling.

A Company Built on Timeless Design

ArchitectMade was founded in Denmark in 2004 with a unique vision.

Rather than creating entirely new products, the company sought to preserve and reintroduce forgotten or overlooked masterpieces from some of Denmark's most influential architects and designers. Their goal was simple: to ensure that exceptional design could continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

The collection includes creations from renowned Danish designers whose work helped shape Scandinavian design around the world. Every piece is selected not only for its beauty but also for the story, personality and craftsmanship behind it.

The result is a collection that feels both contemporary and timeless at the same time.

More Than Decoration

One of the reasons ArchitectMade products have remained so popular is that they create an emotional connection.

Many modern home accessories are purely decorative, but ArchitectMade pieces often tell a story, spark a memory or create a conversation.

Whether displayed on a bookshelf, windowsill, desk or mantelpiece, these wooden figures bring personality into a space. Their simple forms and natural materials embody everything that Danish design is known for: simplicity, functionality and warmth.

The Story of the Duck and Duckling

Among all the pieces in the ArchitectMade collection, none is quite as beloved as Hans Bølling's Duck and Duckling.

The inspiration came from a real event that took place in Frederiksberg, Denmark, in the spring of 1959.

During a busy rush hour, a family of ducks wandered into a road filled with cars and pedestrians. A policeman noticed the family and stopped all traffic to allow the ducks to cross safely. The heartwarming moment was photographed and quickly appeared in newspapers across Denmark, capturing the imagination of the nation.

For Danish architect and designer Hans Bølling, the story perfectly reflected something special about Danish culture: a respect for nature, an appreciation for life's small moments and a willingness to pause and notice simple everyday miracles.

Inspired by the event, Bølling created the now-famous Duck and Duckling figures.

Handcrafted from beautiful teak wood, the figures feature smooth curves, movable heads and an unmistakable sense of character. More than sixty years later, they remain among the most recognisable pieces of Danish design.

Hans Bølling: The Designer Behind the Ducks

Hans Bølling is one of Denmark's most celebrated designers.

Known for his playful approach, humour and creativity, Bølling originally trained as an advertising designer before pursuing architecture. Throughout his career, he designed everything from furniture and buildings to the charming wooden figures that would later become design classics.

His work has always balanced precision with personality, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Duck and Duckling collection.

Even today, these simple wooden figures continue to bring joy to homes across the world.
