  • Bojesen in large format

Kay Bojesen’s wooden figures are among the biggest icons in Danish design – and with “Kay Bojesen Masterpieces”, Kay Bojesen Denmark introduces a new category that embraces the greatness of Bojesen’s cult design while also marking the 100th anniversary of the woodsmith’s first work. This autumn, the Monkey, Elephant and Hippo are launched in XXL format, which, with monumental dimensions, show how Kay Bojesen’s masterful craftsmanship brings wood to life, continuing to write design history with original stories in wood, which with their current icon status have grown as design classics.

Danish design history and interior tradition are known for sublime wood design – and love for this organic material has grown steadily in the 100 years since Kay Bojesen first made the leap from silversmith to woodsmith. In other words, the timing is just right for adding another branch to Kay Bojesen’s design tree, which not only embodies the popularity and icon status of the wooden figures, but gives them the physical pondus they deserve.

The shape of the XXL animals in the Kay Bojesen Masterpieces series is based on the original figures from the archive as well as the supersize measurements that Kay Bojesen used for both the Elephant and the Monkey. At the end of the 1950s, he created the latter on request as an eye-catching landmark for an art shop, and this impressive sculptural display is central to the modern approach to large masterpieces that take well-known figures out of the bookcase and onto the floor as exclusive wooden design objects and works of art in line with other large furniture classics.

Both Monkey and Hippo were originally intended to be used as functional objects by Kay Bojesen. The Monkey was supposed to have been a children's coat hook, but ended up being an international design icon instead, whereas the functionality of the hippo has become firmly established both then and now. The original Hippo from 1955 thus keeps track of the pencil or pen on your desk, while the new big brother closes his jaws around today’s news as a eye- catching newspaper holder, which, like Monkey XXL and Elephant XXL, naturally forms part of the interior design as compelling proof of Kay Bojesen’s living influence on Danish design. For the children’s room as well as for the more mature investment.
